ugh

I go away for one weekend and don’t stick to plan.  When I come back, I run 3 days in a row.  Weigh in after 10 days (I’ve switched weigh ins to Fridays) and I was only down .2.  Ugh.

I won the competition

celticharpie on Oct 3rd 2012 02:45 pm

So I won the weight loss competition.  Got $140 in cash and a yellow smiley face balloon.  This week has been my first non-competitive week and I slipped a bit.  I’m up about .4 lbs since last week.  Most of this is attributed to driving to Chicago and back (20 hours of driving between Friday and Sunday) for the Northwestern football game.  Oh, and the tailgating.  And the meals out.  You know the drill.

I have also decided to start doing my weigh ins on Friday mornings.  This has worked better for me in the past due to the fact that the times that I stray (we all do) are always on the weekends.  I’m very good and on plan during the week!  So I will weigh in this Friday.  I predict a loss ;)

I ran this morning, and will do so again tomorrow, despite not running in the past week.  That was a bad move, but I’m solving the problem.  I’m still on target.  If I work hard, keep on plan, and run every day or most days, I can still meet my ONEderland by the end of October goal.

eight week challenge complete

celticharpie on Sep 26th 2012 09:39 am

Well, today marks the end of the eight week weight loss challenge I was participating in.  I had a banner week and lost 3 lbs!  I ran almost every day this week and really did a great job watching my diet.  I’ll know later today if I won the $180 or so prize :)

Interestingly enough, last night I had to work an event late and had dinner out.  I ended up drinking a bottle of Coke.  I have been a soft drink fiend my whole life, and this time, it was just not that good.  I have been off soda for nearly two months, my only sodas have been on a road trip and a flight.  I just didn’t really enjoy it.  However, I was tired and needed the sugar and caffeine.  I now know that I can safely avoid the stuff unless it’s a rare occasion.  That’s progress.

Never been so happy with a <1 lb loss week

celticharpie on Sep 19th 2012 09:28 am

Last week I was over the moon with another good loss for the week.  On that same day, I found out that my great uncle had passed away and I hastily made plans to attend the funeral over the weekend.  It was a 5 hour each way drive, and I was doing the drive on little sleep which meant:  sugar and calories galore.

Of course, with funerals comes food.  I tried to be good, but it was hard to stay on my diet.  One thing I really hate about having weigh ins on Wednesdays is that you have very little time to recover from the weekend if you go off plan.  When I arrived back in town on Sunday evening, I weighed in just to see how bad I had been.  I was at 218, up 4.6 from the previous Wednesday’s weigh in.  I had a run on Monday and then decided to add one on Tuesday as well.  On today’s run, I was extra good and added 5 more minutes to my run time, making it a 30 minute day.  I have been very on plan with my diet, and I was able to get the scale down 5.4 lbs from Sunday night.  Not too bad.  I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy to lose less than a pound in a week.

keep on track

celticharpie on Sep 12th 2012 12:06 pm

I had a fabulous trip to Chicago last weekend.  Got to see my friends from college and go to a football game at my alma mater.  We won, in a downpour of rain, but it was so much fun!  I also ate out for lunch that day and spent 3 hours at a tailgate.  Yep.  Bratwurst (I had 1/2 of one), beer (2 of those), and chips and guacamole (my personal kryptonite).  When I got on the scale Sunday night, I was up 1.4 lbs.  It wasn’t unexpected, but I was worried I couldn’t make enough progress by today– weigh in day.

So, I did my C25K Week 5 Day 3 run (20 minutes uninterrupted) on Monday, and then added a 45 minute (2.5 mile) power walk on Tuesday.  Today was my first day of Week 6.  I stepped on the scale and WHAMMO!  I’m down 1.4 lbs.

During class yesterday we did an exercise about functions of the brain.  We all had candy bars with various statements taped to the back of each. Then we had to pass them to the correct “part” of the brain.  After we reviewed them all, the professor passed the candy around for us to eat.  I said, “no thanks.”  It was a challenge, but I did it.

super scale movement!

celticharpie on Sep 5th 2012 01:51 pm

Well, after all the whinging I did last week about the scale not moving…. BOOM!  I lost 3.4 pounds this week.  I think some of it is due to the fact that I did a ton of walking over the weekend at the Irish Festival and didn’t consume any of the yummy, albeit dangerously high in calories and fat, food.  I didn’t even have a Guinness.  I did treat myself to a cherry limeade, as it was sweltering and in the upper 90’s.

So, here’s the good news:

08/01/2012 - 225.4 - start weight
08/08/2012 - 222.8 - down 2.6
08/15/2012 - 221.0 - down 1.8
08/22/2012 - 219.2 - down 1.8
08/29/2012 - 218.2 - down 1.0
09/05/2012 - 214.8 - down 3.4

Total weight loss so far:  10.6 lbs

I know that the scale doesn’t tell the whole story, but this means I’m back on track for my goals.  I am losing just around 2 lbs a week.

Anyway, yay me.

victory!

celticharpie on Sep 2nd 2012 11:18 am

So I had written a post yesterday about how bummed I was that the scale wasn’t moving.  Yesterday I was home all day, which is usually a bit of a danger.  I decided that I just couldn’t do the Herbalife shake for both breakfast and lunch, so I actually ate lunch.

I stayed within my calorie limits.

Today was a running day and I dilly dallied around the house (after waking up late).  It was hot and I paid the price when I finally got out to run.  It was a hard run…  but I completed it.  I finished the week strong.

Hopped on the scale when I got back and BOOM!  I was down to 216.2.  This is after being stuck at 218 for about a week.

Going to the KC Irish festival where there will be lots of walking.  There will also be temptation (Guinness, fish and chips, shepherd’s pie), but I will resist.

Hitting the shower, then having a late breakfast shake.

Go me!

weigh in blues

celticharpie on Aug 29th 2012 01:31 pm

Well, I built myself up for disappointment.  I weighed in today at 218.2.  Only down 1 lb for the week… and I was so good. I kept on my diet, added weight training, kept up on my running… and blech.

I think what makes me the most frustrated is that my loss numbers have shrunk each week.  I realize that slow and steady wins the race and all that, but if I’m not averaging a little higher loss per month, I’m not going to make any of my short term goals.

The other thing is that most of the time, people my size lose a bunch at first.  I really haven’t.

running and weigh in tomorrow

celticharpie on Aug 28th 2012 11:14 pm

I have been very good all week.  I have logged everything and stayed within my bounds.  Tomorrow morning is a running day and weigh in.  Fingers crossed.

My grad school classes are off and running (in addition to working full-time at the university, I’m pursing a Master’s Equivalency Degree in Music Therapy).  I have a ton of work to do before the end of the day tomorrow.  I’m going to try to get a large writing assignment (due Friday) knocked out tomorrow.  I know if I just sit down and get it finished, I will feel much better.

Sometimes, with as much effort as it takes to write things, I wonder why it is I’m pursuing a Master’s Degree!  What was I thinking????

In other news, my skin has broken out.  I’m chalking that up to getting rid of final toxins.  There is practically nothing processed in my diet right now, and I’m running 3x a week. Not sure what kind of game mother nature is playing.  I call shenanigans:  either grey hair OR acne.  Not both!

Today a male co-worked (who is a runner and has been very supportive of me getting started) commented that I look different.  He said I looked good and he could see the weight loss in my face.  I’m not sure I buy that (it’s only 7 lbs so far), but it was nice of him.

Fingers crossed that the scale will be my friend tomorrow….

Scale movement

celticharpie on Aug 27th 2012 11:26 am

So one of the things I feel I have to do to keep myself on plan is to weigh myself every day.  I realize that many people feel this is a bad idea as it makes you too conscious of slight weight gains (which are normal), but for me it is a necessity.

I need the constant reminder.  When I’m not looking at those numbers, I have a better chance of just foregoing the diet.  Knowing that I have to remain accountable every single day is the motivation I need.  I’ve worked really hard this week, and it has been showing in the scale.  While I’m not seeing huge losses on a weekly basis, I’m staying in the range that keeps the weight off:  1-2 lbs a week.

I thought I would struggle a bit after leaving the 220’s.  I always feel that the 10 lbs increments are always the trickiest.  My mind freaks out when I see 220 vs. 219.8  It’s the same reason that stores price everything at 4.99.  It’s that one penny, or one tenth of a pound that means the difference.

Happy to say that I have not revisited the 220’s since leaving them.  Yesterday I weighed in at 218.6 (after a run).  This morning I weighed in at 218.8.  I’m going to do some weight training today, and I might try to go for a walk tomorrow morning, as I don’t run again until Wednesday.

Wednesday is also weigh in day.  I’m hoping I can make it to 218, or somewhere in the 217’s by that time.  I think it’ll happen.

Sitting here drinking my protein shake and thinking about everything I need to do in the next three days to be successful.
