Oh my aching back!

Thank you, Round, for your wise advice.  I have been fortunate to only have had minor back problems that went away after a day or 2 and I couldn’t imagine having to life w/lifelong back pain so I’m going to take it easy on this one.

I got up at my normal time and either planned to do bootcamp or my yoga dvd.  At first I thought my back felt pretty good so I was going to do bootcamp and just take the low-impact route.  After I got dressed and went to the bathroom I had already tightened up a bit so I decided to go the yoga route.  I figured some stretching would be good for me.  After about 20 minutes I realized that even that was too much.  Once the DVD segued into the pilates portion I knew that I was flirting w/disaster so I just quit.  Me, quit.  I’m ok w/it, though, b/c I know that taking it easy now will allow me to get back into action sooner.  So today I’m making an appointment w/my chiropractor and hopefully in a couple of days I’ll be back to myself.

My challenge now is to not let this forced break from exercise turn into an excuse to pig out b/c that’s my typical response.  But I kind of proved to myself last night that I could handle food better b/c I made lasagne for supper (it was supposed to be Sunday on my “cheat” day, long story) and instead of watching my hubby eat it and me eating my WW meal I decided to have 1 piece in place of my WW meal and some applesauce.  I told myself I couldn’t have any garlic bread and didn’t.  I also passed on the M&M’s that I know are buried in the freezer, although I had to brush my teeth after supper to accomplish that.  Anyway, I showed myself that I’m in control and it felt good.  I can do it for a few more days, I know I can.  But I am going to make my hubby get rid of the candy, I’m not superman!

Ouch! Sorry your back is giving you trouble. Is there anything worse than having a backache when you want to workout? Still, you’re smart to take a couple of days off and not push it.

Good job on passing up the m&ms. Me? I found a bag of Giradelli chocolate chips in the cupboard. Bad Patty! Bad!

Glad that my painful experience can help someone else - I think you’re making the right decision to take off from exercise for a few days.

But I didn’t say give up my dear — No, I think maybe it’s a good idea that you are 100% focused on your diet & no cheat days until your back is better. The exercise allows for you to have more leeway in what you eat than healthy eating alone…

The toothbrushing is always a good strategy. I sometimes do well w chewing gum too. I keep sugarfree caramel hard candies around for real emergencies. I don’t like them much but they are very sweet, and usually just sucking on one for a minute or two is enough, then i can spit it out and move on…

I know all too well how hard it is to be sidelined by injury during boot camp!! There are back therapy exercises that would probably help. Talk to you chiropractor and do a little googling. I threw out my back when I was 16 and have been plagued by back problems ever since. I’ve been through physical therapy and I still use those exercises all the time. They really help stretch out those muscles. Also, heating pads are a big help. And I’ve worked on strengthening my core - if my abs are strong, they help support my back. I have weak back muscles and a strong core is key. I rarely have back problems anymore, just when TOM is around these days (I get back cramps, just like during childbirth. Yay me! LOL!!)

You are totally doing the right thing by taking it easy now, instead of pushing it and really doing some damage. Then you could end up with an exercise restriction for months (been there, done that. it SUCKS!!)

I’m thinking lots of back mending thoughts for you!! Don’t give up!!

Ahh you have some serious self control, woman! Lasagna is one of my favorites! Hope the back continues to feel better… I’m also slowly learning that resting our bodies is just as important as exercise!
