A Life Less Overweight

Holiday Heft

Well, with the holidays approaching, I have been exercising less and eating more. And stuff I wouldn’t normally eat that I am giving myself permission to since it’s the season. It’s all just bad habits, with no good rhyme or reason why. I am really struggling with exercising during the school year. I am just tired when I get home, and the last thing I want to do is move my ass. But I’m always glad when I do. It’s just going to be a hurdle I clear, and suck it up and just do it.

So, I am up five pounds since my summer weight loss. Not a lot, but enough for me to be scared. I was scared two pounds ago, but that didn’t stop me either!! It’s always so much easier to put it on than take it off. How do you working women handle finding energy to exercise?

I guess I qualify as a working woman, I’ll try to answer the question.

I try to force myself to exercise both weekend days (embarrased smile, as I missed both days this weekend).

Then I try to find just one day during the week when I can. Once I find one, I try for another.

Things that have helped me - having gym dates w friends, working out at my old office where there was a fitness center, keeping a gym bag in my office AND in my car, joining a class, buying DVDs. Exercising in the mornings, where far fewer excuses are possible.

Also, stupid as it sounds, putting big gold stars in my agenda after I worked out on a given day.

Wow, this could be my post, except I don’t have a “job”; at least not for money…

I don’t have a “real” a job either, though I kind of work outside the home here and there. I agree with making your days off mandatory work days. When I was working full time, I would take 2 days that would be workout days. The night before these days I would wear my workout clothes to bed and head to the gym first thing in the morning when I woke up before I did anything else(ok maybe I would brush my teeth first). The point of it was that I went and got it out of the way, that way I couldn’t delay it til later in the day when I would be too tired. (that was back when I worked 12 hour shifts on a regular basis).

Also wanted to add that I, along with a lot of people,. have been strugggling during the holidays. I think its just a part of learning this thing we call healthy living :)

Hi there! =] Struggling during the holidays can be especially hard. In my opinion, if you’re really struggling with losing weight, I would try and simply maintain for now. Try not to focus on losing weight, but still exercise and eat as best you can. And then when the new year rolls around, refocus yourself and reassess your goals.

And coming from a working woman, I find time to exercise before I go to work. I don’t know if this is possible for you. Most gyms open really early for people who work or go to school early. I find that I feel more energized after a work out, so it’s a good start to a day. Plus, when I get home from work I can just crash and not have to worry about it anymore.

For me, I workout within minutes of arriving home from school. There are days when I’m exhausted (usually more mentally than physically) but I remind myself of a few things:
1. How much better I feel when I get done,
2. How much easier it is for me to make good eating choices if I have exercised,
3. That we are paying the babysitter extra to keep the boys so that I can workout, so if I don’t I’m wasting our family’s money.

I also layout my workout clothes before I leave for school and plan which workout I’m going to do on my drive home so there is not an option of skipping it once I get home.

Good luck to you for finding what works for you.
