focusing on the protein now

Posted by: billie In: blogging helps

I think that making sure i am getting plenty of lean protein with each meal and snack is making a difference.  Those damn empty carbs just make me go crazy. I’m not necessarily a big fan of the high protein diets for the long term.  I mean sure i lose weight pretty quick right off the bat and yes it does keep me from feeling hungry all the time. But, i feel like as soon as i eat a carb i gain weight back really quick and go carb crazy. Which doesn’t really sound much different that what happened last night… anyway, there is also the grilled chicken burnout, and plus i love pasta and i always eat the whole wheat stuff. Not to mention the worst side effect of eating so much protein, constipation.  So, that is why i have been pairing the protein with fruit all day.  I have got to find a balance.

Well, this is the plan. I’m gonna focus on getting plenty of lean protein all day, balancing it with fruits and vegees.  I need to stay away from my trigger foods, chocolate, pasta, pizza and chips.  About half way thru the day today i decided to test myself for some reason and after i ate a protein heavy lunch i had 1 of those chocolate bells that got me started last night. I did it! I managed to eat just the one. I had a lingering satisfaction from the lunch that didn’t disappear when i had the chocolate. I honestly didn’t even want another one.  I realize that this may be my ultimate goal, to be able to eat just 1 piece of chocolate. Wouldn’t that be lovely? One chocolate really does taste better than a whole bag.

Today’s protein packed calories:  1 cup low fat cottage cheese (180) with approx 1 cup of frozen blueberries (70) with splenda, then i had 2 servings of shaved ham (100) followed by 1 hotdog (90) on a wheat bun (120) with mustard and ketchup (10), 1 hershey’s chocolate bell (35), a michaelina’s lean meal: lasagna with meat sauce (300), i added an extra ounce of fat free mozzarella (45) for more protein and an orange (70).

Calories so far 1020.

Finding a protein for a snack wasn’t so easy. I’m going to have to look for stuff at the grocery. Maybe some turkey pepperoni with some cheese. I did find a couple things in the house. The strawberry cottage cheese double (130) was good but it wasn’t quite enough, so i rumaged until i found a box of atkins advantage chocolate caramel nougat bars (150). They have 11g of protein, so i ate one of those, it wasn’t very good, now i know why it was in the back of the cabinet. I still feel like i need an oral fix so i made a pot of coffee. Probably not the best idea considering i am wanting to start getting to sleep earlier, but i haven’t had any coffee since i got sick and it sounds good to me. So i will add 2 cups coffee (10) with splenda and cream (20) to my evening snack list.

Today’s calorie total: 1330.   That’s pretty good.

Tomorrow is new year’s eve.  I don’t have any party plans, in fact my daughter’s friend is coming to spend the night.  I do, however, have a bottle of wine in the fridge that i have been patiently waiting to drink.  And i can promise that i will drink the entire bottle tomorrow night. And … i don’t even feel guilty about it.  I will just stick to my high protein plan and i will NOT get the munchies and have an evening snack. Wine alone.

Turkey jerky is a good high protein-low fat snack. Numm! Good luck on your journey!
