I guess I run now

or I’m trying to anyway.

Success! and radio silence…

Hubby successfully defended his diss on Monday & was referred to as “Dr.” for the first time around 1:30 that day (this is a privilege reserved for the dissertation director, so I was only the second person to call him that).

We haven’t gone hog wild with the celebrations: a trip to the beach on Monday night, friends over last night, jam making today. But it has been a relaxing couple of days. Tomorrow we’ll start packing to head back down state & cleaning/getting this house ready for our tenant’s return on Saturday. It’ll be a crazy couple of weeks after that getting classes prepped, but I’m aiming to get into a workout routine as quickly as possible.

I’m also canceling cable. Hubby hates TV, everything I might want to watch is on Hulu anyway, and I’m much more productive when there’s no siren song of mindless TV to answer. Without TV this summer, those 1.5-2 hour walks were perfect. I had the time to do them. With TV, it’ll be harder to motivate myself off the couch & out the door. Folks who have done this already…it’s doable, right? Help me out here as I am a little nervous about cutting the cord.

Okay, it’s only for a 1 year experiment. I enjoy summers without the noise box blathering on and on, but then I’m usually happy to return to some mindless entertainment in the fall. In fact, I usually OD on TV that first week back.

Anyway, the real “radio silence” in the title isn’t about the TV thing: it’s about my relative absence from this site. I usually reserve blog writing/reading for when hubby’s away from the house or I’m away from him…cause this is MY space & while he knows about this blog, I’m just not into having him looking over my shoulder reading it…not that he’s interested, mind you. Anywho, for the last couple of weeks we’ve been pretty inseparable what with his folks being in town, all the friend packing/moving, and his major revision sessions for the diss. So…and I’m only realizing this now…I haven’t had much alone time to write my own (non-work) stuff. That’s something I’m looking forward to doing when we get back down state. There’s actually a lot I’m looking forward to, but blogging regularly is at the top of the list.

wow, congrats to hubby and to you for your long-suffering support : )

as you know, I broke up with satellite/cable TV in November of last year. I have to say, I really have not missed it. everything I want to watch is available online. Most of it for free and some of it I pay for if I really want it (for example going thru season 2 of Mad Men on DVD right now). And a lot of what I like to watch is on “regular” tv for free (Heroes, Lost, 24, that’s about it).

So for us, it’s been painless. The biggest hit was to my 10 year old, who had to give up Hannah Montana etc. and still feels like the Little Match Girl over the whole thing.

You’ll be fine : )

Congrats on the Diss!!!!! Sending cyber-champagne to you!

We also pulled the plug on the cable tv over a year ago. I do not miss it at all. DH misses sports sometimes. We got the hdtv rabbit ears and get a few local stations. There’s Hulu, and we signed up for Netflix which is great for us. We have been watching a lot of BBC tv series. You can watch some netflix movies online too.

Mine doesn’t read mine anymore. It bothered me for awhile, but then I got used to it. So now I can safely complain about him and probably not get ‘caught’. Not that I have a lot to complain about but you know how it is, sometimes you just wanna vent. we chopped our extended cable and dvr services about a week ago and so far, no one is missing it too much. The result is my bill going from $95 to $13 a month! I like this. What else can I chop!?

I am coming back strong tomorrow, Monday, with food logging, exercise accountability and an eat-no-shit attitude. Want to join me?

So it looks like a lot of us have 86′d the tv & lived to tell the tale. I love it. Okay, so I’m missing the premiere of House tonight cause our rabbit ears don’t pick up the Fox station, but between hulu & netflix, I’m not missing much besides incredibly long commercial breaks, big cable bills, and hours of flipping through stations only to discover that nothing’s on.

Wish I’d done this years ago. :)

How did I miss this post? Tell hubby congrats from all of us and give yourself a pat on the back, too, for helping him through it.

A friend of mine and his family don’t have tv and he had the hardest time adjusting but I think once you get through the “detox” period it’s not too bad. We were w/o for almost a week this summer due to a storm and I was almost sad when the satellite guy showed up to reinstall our dish. This quiet was nice.
