first real test
Tonight we go out with one of my colleagues & his wife. They want us to walk into town and go to this award-winning burger joint with them. The place is ranked like 20th in the country for burgers, so they’ll expect us to order and eat a damn burger. Not good: this is too soon into my diet for such binge temptations.
But I’m not a victim of circumstances. First, I decided I’d get the burger with a salad rather than their fries on the side. I can try one of the hubby’s fries if they look good & he’ll not let me steal more than that. But let’s face it, I know what fries taste like & I’ve been loving my leafy greens lately. So that was my first decision. Then I went online & found the menu & it turns out I can get the burger on a big salad (no bun!), so I can try the burger & not offend our hosts, but I don’t have to pig out completely. Figure 400 cals for the burger alone, so with dressing on the side, that’s still a sensible meal and one I might even make at home sometime.
So far I’ve had cheerios and milk and a large salad today. I may have a piece of toast with peanut butter (130 cals) before we leave for their house so I’m not starving at the restaurant. And while I’d love to get a beer tonight…they have my very favorite porter on tap…that’d be another 250 calories in the mix. Meanwhile, I burned 170 calories on the treadmill this morning and another 80 with my yoga/mat work this morning, so I feel okay about tonight. I have this under control & will come out of this test the victor.

You are a planning guru! Great move, checking out the menu on the net so you could decide what you’d have. Sounds like husband is very supportive, too. A shame you couldn’t miss the pb on toast and have that beer instead, but it’s probably better to not go hungry. Hope it was a great night.
Thanks! I didn’t stick to the plan, though: ordered the burger with a side salad & ate half the burger, bun and all. Then after dinner we had a latte. So I consumed more calories than I’d intended, but I did manage to stay away from the fries & order water rather than beer.
Reading the menu in advance let me know what to expect & visualize (kinda like what you’re doing on your blog with the body visualizations) how I’d respond to such a tempting array of food.
It was a very, very good burger. One of the best I’ve had, and it would’ve been nothing in the past for me to stop just short of licking the empty plate, so it was a successful evening despite the bun.
