Congrats to Dad

OMG. My sister told me my Dad weighs 200 pounds now. I can’t believe it. Men have it so easy. Of course it helps that he  works out with a personal trainer a lot, but he isn’t really watching what he eats. He does have a new hobby though. He referees games for fun and profit. lol.

I was going to sign up for the hwsa (Houston Women’s Soccer Association), but the games and practices are all on the other side of town and I really don’t have time to drive an hour each way to play soccer. :( Soccer is a good workout too.  To my delight, when I got home last night from walking the dogs, I checked my mail and found the normal neighborhood junk mail and on one of the peices of mail, there was an ad for Fitness Connection. It’s a local gym that has everything my old 24 Hour SuperSport had plus costs only $10 a month and has a $99 initiation fee. Now the 24 Hour was 29.99 a month and a $79 initiation fee.

Fitness Connection has

  • a women’s only section
  • some really good counding classes
  • no weird smell
  • reasonably clean, although no free towels so most people don’t wipe off the equipment, but I’m not fussy about it
  • pool
  • sauna
  • jacuzzi
  • lots of cardio machines
  • raquetball court
  • basketball court
  • open 24-7

All in all, I’m happy with it (not have actually used it yet).  I’ve read some bad reviews from people complaining about the same things that go wrong at any club (over-charging when you try to cancel, dirty facilities, broekn into car, and customer service.) Nothing seemed particularly bad when I was there.  The salesman didn’t try to force the supplements or personal training on me. He just explained them and when I said no and explained that my money situation doesn’t allow too much extra right now, he backed up and took care of just the membership.

I was going to work out before work this morning since Wednesday is my 12-9 at branch day this month, but I woke up to the beginning of my period and with the nausea and lack of energy, I’m SO not going to the gym today. I should be better tomorrow.

So how am I going to integrate this whole gym thing into my life. I want to go in at least 4 times a week and not go on Sunday.  So I’m thinking  Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday as a regular thing for just over an hour each time.  I wonder if before work would be best since I hear it gets really besy between 5:00 and 9:00. Another option is simply waiting until 8:00 to go in and just catching the tail end of everything. So my goal is to go in from 8:00-9:30 Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and any time on Saturday.  I’m going to wait on taking the classes because I build up my muscles a bit better.  Yes, as I think about it, 8-9:30 is perfect during the week because it allows me to get home, take the dogs on their walks and have dinner before going back out, but its not so late that it will keep me up. I’ll be back home well before 10 and the dogs will also have time to calm down before we go to bed.  I still need to start riding a bike. I think I may need to scrap my project bike because I will never clean it off and just buy a cruiser or cruiser/commuter bike and start riding it to help me get in shape and save money. I live so close to the Main Library that it won’t add more than 10 minutes to my commute and after the month starts, I don’t think I’ll have to come up here to work as often and I can start just taking the work car up here for meetings and such since they are work-related.

I want an aquarium. They are so beautiful and peaceful and my boss says I can have one in my office. Alright, I lie. She says I can keep a betta as long as I keep it alive and the setup isn’t an ‘aquarium’. I think what she means by that is I can’t set something big up. I should be able to set up a 3 gallon Eclipse (has the filter and light in the hood) on my desk and it won’t look like a steareotypical aquarium and won’t take up a lot of space and look impactful.  I’m going to wait to set one up until I work at main every day though since I’ll need to keep a close eye on it and try to feed it every day except weekends.  I put together a cart at petco and it was a bit expensive for eveything I want, but I think I can build it slowly. Buy the rocks, a mesh picker upper thingie, a couple of plastic plants, the food, water testing strips, and the aquarium first and pick up more decorations, the heater, and  a background later. Oh yeah, and pick up the betta at some point. I reckon I’ll get a male betta, either red or yellow or orange and he’ll live alone in the tank. The sound of the filter is supposed to be soothing and feng sui the space, so that’ll be nice too.
