I CAN fit in my pants!

Well I had a visit with the Gyno Squad yesterday for my annual exam. My lady parts doctor is really cool and friendly, and I really like her a lot, even if the exam is the worst thing known to mankind. Anyway, we talked a little bit about how I was feeling and I mentioned that I really need to lose weight (like that isn’t obvious, the gown wouldn’t even close over my boobs!) because I would like to get pregnant within the next few years.

Her answer really surprised me: to not let weight be a determining factor for when I should or shouldn’t get pregnant. She’s seen women of all shapes and sizes get pregnant, and the only time it makes a difference is when I’m actually pregnant - and then, it will only make a difference if I’m in shape, not necessarily of a healthy weight.

We talked a little bit about my family history (dad with Type 1 diabetes, high blood pressure, and now heart attack, two grandpas with Type 2 diabetes and heart problems), and how I have Protein C in my blood, and I joked a little and said “I have a few things working against me.” She stopped and said the only thing I couldn’t control is the Protein C (makes my blood stickier so it can clot easier than normal folks). Everything else (weight, healthy lifestyle, etc.) is all under my control. She encouraged me to focus on getting in shape (”and the weight will come off naturally”) rather than focusing on losing weight.

I thought she made a really good point. Of course I want to have a smokin’ hot body, but I really need to consider my body as a whole.

As a side note, I think it’s hilarious doctors continue talking about life while they perform invasive exams. Hearing about your children while I’m having my lady parts examined seems just a bit…unnatural.

It sounds like you have a great doctor! I was overweigh with my first child (I weighed 245 at the beginning and 266 at the end) and everything was just fine, no problems. We are ready to start trying for baby #2 now and I’ve thought about waiting until I lose this weight but I don’t want to put life on hold for something that may take a bit longer than I thought. Anyways, I completely agree with the Dr. about forcuing on being healthy rather than losing weight, for me it’s taken the pressure off and I make better choices…not all the time but much better than before. They say for the weight to stay off then it’s really about losing slowly and making forever changes. Good luck!

LOL! Carrying on normal conversation while having an exam is certainly one of those things that I don’t look forward to. Luckily, after a couple of children and everyone under the sun having seen my hoo-ha, it’s not quite so bad.

We’re on sort of the same boat. I was 206 when I got pregnant with DD1. I ended up with gestational diabetes and, as a result, didn’t gain a single pound the whole pregnancy because I had to change my diet. Afterwards I was down to about 160 when I got pregnant with DD2. No diabetes this time, so I ate whatever I wanted. Gained about 60lbs. Now I’m about 224 and hope to lose a bunch so that I can get pregnant again (before I’m 35) without having major complications like the diabetes. That *really* scares me.

PS I hope that you’re father is doing better.
