Determining Whether Food Intolerances are Making You Fat

Food intolerances affect a large portion of the United States and the world. In fact, many people don’t know that they even have food intolerances because the symptoms are often ambiguous and easily confused with less-significant factors. For some people, however, food intolerances can be the major cause of weight gain. Different kinds of food intolerances have certain effects on the body, and effects can be unique to different people. But, there are a few ways to determine if food intolerances are actually making you fat.

Doctor’s Recommendation

The quickest and easiest way to find out if food intolerances are making you fat is to suggest the idea to your doctor. There are certain food allergy tests that your doctor can give you to find out if you are intolerant to certain foods, such as dairy, gluten or soy. Dairy and soy allergies or intolerances are generally simple to determine provided the tests conclude with clear results, but gluten intolerance (in some cases Celiac’s Disease) can be more difficult to pin point.

Dairy intolerances, or lactose intolerance, are one of the most common food intolerances found in humans. Testing for this type of intolerance is fairly simple and the effects of dairy on someone who is intolerant will be quite noticeable once confirmed intolerant. Intolerances of other foods will follow the same direction upon confirmation of the body’s inability to break down the food substances.

Process of Elimination

Another effective way to determine if food intolerances are making you fat is to self-test yourself through the process of elimination. Often times, dairy and gluten intolerances are the most common and recognizable influences for weight gain because of the compounds found in each substance. The most common effects of both include bloating, gas, intense stomach cramps, influxes in acne, dark circles under the eyes, migraine headaches and constipation or unpredictable bowel habits. Since these effects are common not just for people dealing with food intolerances, but for others as well, it is difficult to precisely place the blame on an intolerance.

Begin eliminating certain foods from your diet one at a time. If you are afflicted by these symptoms most after eating dairy products, start by eliminating all dairy products, from milk to cheese to yogurt and ice cream. If after 3 to 5 weeks you are still having these symptoms, eliminate another food type usually associated with weight gain, such as gluten. Gluten is in wheat or barley-based products, such as most breads, pasta noodles, tortillas, crackers, etc. 

This is an effective way to determine if a specific food is causing your body grief, which in turn causes weight gain and bodily stress. Part of the reason people gain weight from these foods is because their body cannot break down the elements of each, so it stores the extra energy and nutrients elsewhere, while excreting what it doesn’t “use.”

Food intolerances can seriously affect a person’s health if not curbed. Weight gain is only one health risk of not treating and preventing food intolerances.
