The Atkins diet is a diet that requires a dramatic change in eating habits from main meals to desserts. Carbohydrate reduction is the main focus of the Atkins diet. Carbohydrates are one of the main sources that the body will burn off to get its energy. The amount of carbohydrates consumed is reduced so the body will burn fat instead. The Atkins diet is done in 4 different stages and in each stage, the types of foods and desserts eaten are different.
Phase 1 is a phase that lasts two weeks. In this phase, only 20 carbohydrates are consumed per day. The list of foods that can be eaten is very short and there are no desserts on that list. In addition to no desserts, there are very few fruits on the list that can be eaten. A great alternative to desserts is gelatin dessert. Gelatin needs to be limited in the first phase because this phase is where the body is changing. Gelatin comes in a sugar free version and will have a net carb value of 0. Be careful, though, because gelatin will do nothing to curb the sweet tooth.
Phase 2 is the ongoing weight loss phase. This phase is done until the current weight is within 10 pounds of the goal weight. The second phase is a bit tricky because the amount of carbs that can be consumed will vary for everyone. There will be some trail and error to find the correct amount. The amount of desserts that can be eaten in this phase will go up a bit. Gelatin can still be consumed, and to mix it up, add some whipped topping. Whipped topping comes in a light and sugar free version to lower the carb count. The list of fruits will grow in this phase to include fresh blueberries, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, raspberries and strawberries. Atkins also has their own food products they produce. These include bars that can be eaten as a dessert. The bars come in many different flavors such as chocolate, caramel, fudge and many more. These make the carbohydrate counting process easy since the carb count is already counted for you.
Phase 3 and 4
Phase 3 and 4 are the pre maintenance and maintenance phases. This is where you slowly lose the last 10 pounds and then maintain your goal weight for life. The amount of desserts in this phase will increase some. In addition to gelatin, fruits and Atkins bars, there are many recipes out there that have low carbohydrate counts. Many of these recipes are listed on the Atkins website. Some of these desserts are almond torte, custard ice cream, chocolate brownie drops, cherry cobbler and many, many more. There is a recipe for any type of craving.
The Atkins diet is a strict diet to follow, but not all foods need to be removed completely. Delicious desserts can still be consumed, but it will take a little more work to find the right ones to continue the weight loss quest.
