Cow vs. Goat Milk

Goat milk is not as commonly used throughout the United States as cow milk, but it is by far more commonly seen throughout the world. Goats are capable of providing nutritious milk in the same way that cows are. In fact, there are a number of important similarities between these two types of mlk, and you can use either one of them in order to maintain a great diet of nutrients and nutritional benefits.

There are, however, a few differences between milk from cows and milk from goats. These differences may be inconsequential for you, or they may make the difference between being able to drink one of these two types of milk and not being able to drink the other. If you’re lactose intolerant or sensitive to dairy products, pay particular attention to these differences. Here’s a general comparison of cow milk and goat milk.

Similarities between Cow and Goat Milk

In terms of taste, cow and goat milk are often compared equally. Many people find that goat milk is slightly milder in taste than cow milk, but the general flavor is essentially the same. These two types of milk are also importantly similar in their nutrient content. Both are rich in calcium and other nutrients, and they each make excellent additions to a diet for this reason.

Cow and goat milk have similar applications as well. They can usually be substituted in any cooking or baking freely, and without changing the quantity of milk. They can both be made into different types of cheese, although the fat content in cow milk makes it somewhat more flexible in terms of the types of cheese that can be made. They can both be used in other products that require milk as well, including ice cream.

Differences between Cow and Goat Milk

One of the major differences in cow and goat milk is the fat. Goat milk tends to be slightly higher in fat than cow milk. As with cow milk, however, low fat and skim versions of goat milk are often available too. This makes it less of an issue in terms of dieting. However, there are a few other important differences in the properties of the fat in goat milk as compared with cow milk. The fat molecules in goat milk are smaller than those in cow milk. This means that goat milk is more readily digested and causes fewer disturbances in a digestive system. If you suffer from a sensitivity to lactose, goat milk may be a good way to continue to enjoy milk products without the painful after effects.

The size of the fat molecules in goat milk also means that the milk will not naturally separate out into cream. Therefore, the uses of goat milk are slightly more limited than cow milk.
