Carbohydrate Addict's Diet Food List

The Carbohydrate Addicts Diet was created by Dr. Rachael Heller and Dr. Richard Heller. Both the Hellers’ had battles with weight throughout their lives, and were able to lose weight and maintain their weight loss by following a low carbohydrate diet. The Hellers’ state that the goal of the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet is permanent weight loss. Dieters should not aim for quick weight loss, but instead slow and steady weight loss.

The premise of this diet is based on the notion that many individuals are pre-diabetic or insulin resistant. By eliminating carbohydrates from the diet, dieters can reduce their body’s insulin levels which will lead to weight loss. When on the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet, individuals will eat a low carbohydrate breakfast, a low carbohydrate lunch and a ‘reward’ dinner. Below is a list of approved foods for the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet.

Meats and Poultry

Dieters are allowed 3 to 4 oz of meats or poultry at breakfast and lunch. Below are approved meats:

  • Bacon (must have less than 4 g of carbohydrates per serving)
  • Beef
  • Chicken
  • Corned beef
  • Chicken wings
  • Duck
  • Chicken liver
  • Deli meats (make sure they are all-meat varieties and do not include sugar or fillers)
  • Pork
  • Sausage (make sure they are all-meat varieties and do not include sugar or fillers)
  • Tofu
  • Turkey
  • Veal

Fish and Shellfish

Dieters are allowed 3 to 4 ounces of fish at breakfast and lunch. Below are approved types of seafood:

  • Bass
  • Bluefish
  • Crabmeat
  • Cod
  • Halibut
  • Lobster
  • Oysters
  • Salmon
  • Scallops
  • Shrimp
  • Sole
  • Swordfish
  • Trout
  • Tuna

Fats

While on the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet, individuals are allowed 1 to 2 tbsp of fats at breakfast or lunch. Below are approved fats:

  • Butter
  • Olive oil
  • Mayonnaise
  • Peanut oil
  • Sesame oil
  • Soybean oil
  • Vegetable oil
  • Commercially available salad dressings

Eggs and Dairy

For dieters on the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet, they can have 2 oz of regular or low fat milk in their coffee. Two eggs, 2 oz of cheese or ½ cup of cottage cheese is allowed per day. Additional approved products include:

  • American Cheese
  • Blue Cheese
  • Brie
  • Sour Cream
  • Egg substitute
  • Cheddar Cheese
  • Ricotta Cheese
  • Provolone Cheese
  • String Cheese

Individuals are recommended to eat low fat varieties if available for the above dairy selections.

Vegetables

Dieters are recommended to eat two cups at breakfast and lunch of any of the following vegetables. Vegetables can be eaten raw, sautéed or broiled.

  • Alfalfa sprouts
  • Asparagus
  • Beans (green, snap or wax)
  • Cabbage
  • Capers
  • Celery
  • Cauliflower
  • Cucumbers
  • Pickles
  • Eggplant
  • Fennel
  • Kale
  • Lettuce
  • Mushrooms
  • Okra
  • Peppers
  • Radishes
  • Spinach
  • Squash (summer varieties only)
  • Tomatoes (limit to ½ per meal)
  • Zucchini

Reward Meal

When eating the daily reward meal, dieters are advised to eat 1/3 a plate with protein, which should be one of the above approved cheeses, meats, poultry, seafood or dairy products. One-third of the plate should be from low carbohydrate vegetables (from the approved list above), and 1/3 of the plate should be of high carbohydrate foods. The list of approved high carbohydrate foods is listed below:

  • Apples, apple juice, applesauce
  • Bagels
  • Bananas
  • Cake
  • Cereal
  • Hot or cold cereal
  • Grapes
  • Granola
  • English muffin
  • Figs
  • Hamburger or hot dog with a bun
  • Ice cream
  • Pasta
  • Meatloaf
  • Nuts of any kind
  • Citrus fruit
  • Pancakes
  • Pretzel
  • Waffles

According to the Hellers, if this diet is followed correctly, individuals should be able to lose weight and maintain their weight loss for the rest of their life. Furthermore, this diet will help people eliminate cravings and adapt to a healthier overall lifestyle.
