Can You Mix Diet Supplements with Adderall?

Mixing Adderall with diet supplements can be extremely dangerous. What people may not realize is Adderall, also known as amphetamine–dextroamphetamine, was first marketed as a diet drug. The stimulant medication was first prescribed in the 1960s for weight loss purposes. This category of weight loss drugs fell out of favor in the 1980s because they were found to be highly addictive.

Current Usage

Currently, the primary medical reason for prescribing Adderall is to treat symptoms of ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention hyperactivity disorder). However, the weight loss side effect of the drug has not gone unnoticed. Many people are now abusing Adderall for this and other purposes. It’s not uncommon for mothers to sneak the drug from their own children’s prescription bottle. It’s also become a major problem on college campuses. Students, who are prescribed the drug for ADD or ADHD, will often sell it to others who take it for its weight loss and stimulating effects. College students consider Adderall the drug of choice when they need to pull an all night study session.

Side Effects

Adderall is a stimulant drug that can cause serious side effects including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Chest pain
  • Seizures
  • Irregular heart beat
  • Hallucinations

 Less serious side effects include:

  • Headaches
  • Weight loss
  • Insomnia
  • Dry mouth

The Dangers of Combining Drugs

Mixing Adderall with prescription or over the counter diet supplements is a recipe for disaster. The risk of adverse reactions increases significantly when drugs are combined. Even a seemingly harmless over the counter cold medication can cause serious side effects when combined with Adderall.

If everyone adhered to these precautions, it would go along way to preventing dangerous drug side effects:

  • Always consult with a doctor or pharmacist prior to taking any new medications.
  • Divulge all medications that you are taking, including nonprescription drugs and supplements.
  • Never take someone else’s prescription drugs.

Benefits

The news on Adderall is not all bad. The drug is of great benefit to many ADD and ADHD sufferers. They often report increased concentration, motivation and productivity.  Some sufferers describe feeling normal for the first time in their lives. After years of struggling to keep up in school or the workplace, things suddenly seem to fall into place. Even the struggles of personal relationships can become easier to deal with. When taken as prescribed, Adderall is a relatively safe drug.

Risks of Abuse

The problems arise when the drug is abused or taken illegally. Even those that are prescribed Adderall for legitimate reasons will often go on to abuse the drug. The reason for this is the same one that made the drug so addictive in its first incarnation as a weight loss aid. Stimulants feel good, at first anyway. The high that is experienced when a person first takes a stimulant drug can be very pleasurable. Those susceptible to addiction will want to continue feeling that rush. However, as the body becomes used to the stimulant, more medication is necessary to achieve the same high. This sets the stage for abuse.
