British Heart Foundation Diet Menu

The British Heart Foundation diet is a fad diet that has been circulating on the Internet for years. It is a 3-day diet that claims the dieter can lose 10 pounds over those 3 days. While the exact details of the diet differ from place to place, there is a specific meal plan you must follow during those 3 days.

Day 1

For breakfast, dieters on the British Heart Foundation diet are allowed only these items:

  • Black coffee or tea
  • ½ a grapefruit
  • 1 slice of dry toast
  • 2 tsp. peanut butter

The diet never specifies how much coffee or tea, but it is assumed it means only one glass, but does not specify how big that glass should be—unusual considering how specific the diet is on its measurements of everything else.

Some versions of the diet allow a whole grapefruit, instead of just one. Dry toast means no butter, although one can assume the peanut butter can be placed on the toast rather than eaten right off the spoon.

Lunch is equally as restrictive, allowing only the following:

  • Black coffee or tea
  • 4 oz. of tuna
  • 1 slice of dry toast

As with breakfast, no mention of how much coffee or tea is to be consumed. One can assume only one glass, but no mention is made as to which size. No mention is made as to whether the tuna should only be packed in water, but due to the high calorie content of tuna packed in oil it should be assumed.

Dinner is the final meal of the day and allows only the following:

  • 2 slices of any cold meat
  • 1 cup of string beans
  • 4 oz. of beets
  • 1 small apple
  • 4 oz. of vanilla ice cream

In some variants, a medium apple can be used in lieu of a small apple.

Day 2

Day 2 is not much better than the first. Only three meals are allowed, equally as restrictive. Breakfast is as follows:

  • Black coffee or tea
  • 1 egg
  • 1 slice of dry toast
  • ½ a banana

The egg may be prepared either boiled or poached and some variants allow a whole banana.

Lunch allows the following:

  • 4 oz. of cottage cheese
  • 5 crackers

Dinner is as follows:

  • 3 or 4 oz. of broccoli
  • 2 hot dogs
  • 2 oz. of carrots
  • ½ of a banana
  • 4 oz. of vanilla ice cream

Day 3

Finally we come to the end of the road at day 3. For breakfast, you may have:

  • Black coffee or tea
  • 5 crackers
  • 1 slice of cheddar cheese
  • 1 small apple

Some variants of this diet have a menu of 1 boiled or poached egg and a slice of toast instead of the crackers, cheese and apple.

Lunch allows:

  • 1 hard boiled egg
  • 1 slice of dry toast

Unlike previous meals that allow the egg to be poached, this meal specifies that it be hard boiled.

Finally for dinner, you can have:

  • 4 oz. of tuna
  • 4 oz. of beets
  • 4 oz. of cauliflower
  • ½ of a melon
  • 4 oz. of vanilla ice cream

Although this diet is called the British Heart Foundation diet, it is not sponsored by, nor recommended by the British Heart Foundation.
