Some healthy low fat food is comprised of essential fatty acids that are helpful to your body in numerous ways. They can help lower high blood pressure and triglycerides, while helping to raise HDL cholesterol, or “good” cholesterol. They protect against numerous diseases including heart disease. Even on a low fat diet, you need to eat some fat to remain healthy, and foods with fatty acids are just the thing.
Which Foods Contain Fatty Acids?
All fish contains omega-3 fatty acids which are considered the best fatty acid (and the one most lacking from the diets of Americans). However, they are more concentrated in fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines and herring. Most dieticians recommend eating fish at least twice a week to gain the most health benefit.
Other sources of omega-3 fatty acids include:
- green leafy vegetables
- soy
- tofu
- nuts
- seeds
- walnuts
- almonds
- flax seeds
Additionally, some eggs have begun to by omega-3 enhanced. Canola oil, soybean oil and flax seed oil also contain omega-3 fatty acids.
Though you may be on a low fat diet, you should really work to include these healthy fatty acids in your regular meal planning to increase your health now and in the future.
