Almond Milk: Good for Your Skin?
Almond Milk is the milk derived from grounding or juicing almonds. It is a preference of people on a vegan diet or people allergic to lactose present in regular milk. Almond Milk is an excellent source of manganese and vitamin E. It is also a good source of magnesium, tryptophan, copper, vitamin B2 and phosphorus. Almond milk is also rich in essential fatty acids. Almond milk has many benefits, and one of which is the role it plays in maintaining a healthy skin.

Vitamin E is our body’s natural armor against external factors that are harmful to the skin such as UV rays and environmental pollutants. Studies show that vitamin E together with vitamin A, if applied directly to the skin, can protect the skin from damages caused by sun exposure. Almond milk is also an effective treatment for sunburn. Almond milk baths and lotions and creams with almond milk are effective ways to retain the skin’s moisture even at the onslaught of harsh sun rays.
Vitamin E also protects the skin from DNA damage in the skin cells. This is possible because vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant. As an antioxidant, it helps protect the body from the formation of free radicals by neutralizing them. Free radicals have at least one unimpaired electron, and antioxidants neutralize them by pairing with that electron. Free radicals can cause a lot of irreversible damage. Without the antioxidants to neutralize them, they can easily pair off with other molecules in the body–altering the way cells code genetic materials. When this happens, protein structure change can occur resulting to mutated proteins. Mutated proteins may lead to skin cancer.
Aside from vitamin E’s antioxidating qualities, it also has anti-aging effects. Free radicals are major factors in skin aging. They target the collagen and elastin in the skin. Collagen is responsible for the skin’s firmness. Elastin helps maintain the skin’s elasticity. Antioxidants prevent collagen and elastin depletion. With the vitamin E in almond milk, the skin cells are well cared for, resulting to a younger-looking skin. It does not only nourish the skin, but it also helps firm and tone it.
Tryptophan and Vitamin B2 in Almond Milk
Vitamin B2, or riboflavin, facilitates the use of oxygen by the tissues of the skin, nails and hairs. It is also known to treat dry scalp also known as dandruff. Another important function that riboflavin plays is assisting in the metabolism of tryptophan, converting it into niacin. Niacin or vitamin B3 promotes proper circulation and healthy skin. It also helps with skin hydration by retaining moisture in skin cells.
Essential Fatty Acids in Almond Milk
Almond milk has a high concentration of essential fatty acids. They assist in the regulation of sebum or oil–the root of some skin problems such as acne, blackheads and white heads. They also prevent dry and flaky skin and treat several skin-related diseases.
Almond milk is a beverage and is also an ingredient in various beauty products. It does not only contribute to a healthy skin, but a healthy body as well.
