Acid Alkaline Diet

The Acid Alkaline Diet is based on the idea that imbalances in your body’s acid vs. alkaline levels can cause health problems. If your diet is too acidic, then your body’s fluids become too acidic, and this can lead to illness. The Acid Alkaline Diet seeks to correct health problems by making your diet more alkaline. 

The Premise

Scientists and medical professionals used the pH (power of hydrogen) to measure the acidity of substances. The most acidic substances rate low on the scale, and the least acidic, or more alkaline, substances rate high on the scale. In the past, humans ate a largely alkaline diet based on whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and this alkaline diet helped maintain normal blood pH levels. As modern technology grew more advanced, the human diet became more acidic, leading to widespread imbalances in blood pH levels.

The typical American diet is highly acidic. Foods like meat and dairy, alcohol, caffeine, saturated fats and sugars are highly acidic. Eating an acidic diet lowers your body’s pH and makes your body’s fluids more acidic. Medical professionals believe that low body pH leads to a range of health problems, including allergies, heart disease, obesity and cancer. The Acid Alkaline Diet seeks to raise your body’s pH to a more normal, alkaline level, to prevent illness and promote a healthy weight.

The Diet

To follow the Acid Alkaline Diet, you’ll need to reduce your consumption of acidic foods, while increasing your consumption of alkaline foods. The Acid Alkaline Diet recommends consuming 75 to 80% alkaline foods, and 20 to 25% acidic foods. Some alkaline foods recommended by the Acid Alkaline Diet include:

  • Lentils
  • Rhubarb
  • Green beans
  • Herbal tea
  • Almonds

Some acidic foods are:

  • Meat and dairy products
  • Some fruits
  • Refined white flour
  • Refined sugars
  • Alcohol

The Acid Alkaline Diet calls for a diet based on whole grains that’s rich in alkaline fruits and vegetables. The Alkaline Diet asks you to avoid sweets, candy, fatty foods, alcohol and tobacco.
