6 High Carbohydrate Foods to Stay Away From
|
Foods that are considered high carbohydrate foods are also high in either starch or sugar. Some examples of these types of foods are foods that are made from flour or sugar, foods with added sugar, some starchy vegetables, plus some processed foods (made by man or machine). Some examples of these types of high carbohydrate foods are as follows:
1. Baked Potato
The baked potato is considered a high carbohydrate food because it is a starchy vegetable. The toppings that are put on the baked potato also make it a bad choice when you want to lose weight, particularly when you choose to add a lot of extra cheese and butter.
2. White Bread
Many people may find it odd that white bread is considered a high carbohydrate food. However, it is loaded with flour. Wheat bread may be a better choice, if you limit your amount of it.
3. Raisins
Raisins are considered a high carbohydrate food because although small, they are filled with a lot of sugar.
4. Processed Baked Goods
Yes, of course those tempting processed baked goods (candy, brownies, cakes, etc) are high carbohydrate foods. They are also foods that we should limit in our diet. They are filled with sugar, flour and many chemicals.
5. Spaghetti Made From White Flour
Spaghetti, and other pastas that are made from white flour, is considered a high carbohydrate food. A better choice is a pasta made from whole grains.
6. Honey
You would imagine that honey would be a better alternative than sugar. However, honey is still considered a high carbohydrate food since it is high in natural sugars.
Some Good Carbohydrates To Consider
Although you hear a lot about the high carbohydrates you should limit, there are many good carbs that you can add to your diet lists such as:
- Whole grains
- Most vegetables (except the starchy ones such as potatoes and corn)
- Low sugar fruits
The Pitfalls of Eating Foods that Are High in Carbohydrates
Yes, they are tasty. But there are many reasons why we shouldn’t eat foods that are high in carbohydrates, or at least limit their amount. Some of the reasons are:
- Eating these types of foods regularly can increase your risk of developing health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
- They can cause you to gain weight.
- They can cause your arteries to clog over time.
- They can cause a rise in your glycemic levels, which may be the reason why your energy level rises and then severely drops.
It may be impossible to totally eliminate these types of foods from your diet, since they are so tasty. However, it is vital that we all try to limit these as much as possible to keep our weight at a healthy level, to keep our cholesterol at a healthy level and to just be healthy in general.
