If you're trying to shed some pounds, fighting off sugar cravings is one of the most difficult challenges you may face. Sometimes these cravings come without warning. These cravings for sweets may be caused by a chemical or hormonal imbalance in your body. Or, it could merely be a yearning for something sweet and delectable – especially if you’re on a diet and you know you can’t have it. To shun those fat-inducing desserts and treats, here are some ways which can help you combat those sugar cravings.
1. Eat Healthy
Sometimes, craving for sweets is your body’s way of telling you that you lack certain nutrients. Sugar serves as substitute to a deficiency, which is why you find yourself reaching for that sweet, satisfying treat. To curb these cravings, make sure that you have no nutritional scarcity. Eat a balanced diet, and don’t forget to consume a good dose of healthy carbohydrates, such as whole wheat and grain.
2. Don’t Shop Hungry
When you’re really hungry, everything looks good. And, going to the supermarket with an empty stomach can be dangerous. If you’re already lacking in energy, chances are those chocolate bars and sinful cakes are most appealing. However, you must fight the temptation and keep them away from your shopping cart.
3. Drink Plenty of Water
When your body is dehydrated, it tends to look for fuel in the form of sugar. Keep your body hydrated by drinking enough fluids a day. 8 glasses of water a day keeps your body healthy, and it also helps flush out toxins.
4. Grab Some Gum
Not only does chewing on gum help fight off sugar cravings, it’s proven effective against the munchies in general. Best to carry around a pack of sugarless gum with you at all times. Every time you feel the need to pop open a candy bar, reach for that stick of gum instead. Your body will also be fooled into thinking that it’s eating, and your cravings will certainly subside.
5. Hold Off on Artificial Sweeteners
Artificial sweeteners may be a better alternative to natural sugars, but they actually contribute to increasing your cravings. For those who have sugar addictions, it’s not advisable to simply give in through artificial sweeteners. This fools your body into thinking you’re getting the sweets you yearn for, and doesn’t help at all in combating these cravings.
6. Get Support
You can opt to do the battle alone, or you can seek the support of your friends and family. Letting everyone know that you’re serious about curbing your sugar addiction will help you stick to your guns because of accountability. Out of sight is out of mind, and if nobody is parading sweet treats in front of you, the better chances you have for fighting off your sugar cravings.
