The Clean Program was created by Dr. Alejandro Junger, who was suffering from irritable bowel syndrome and depression. After trying the mainstream approach in dealing with his conditions, Dr. Junger started his search for alternative ways to heal which resulted in his Clean Program.
The idea of the Clean Program is simple: for 21 day you are supposed to consume two shakes and one “hard” meal. Shakes are made using the ingredients you bought as part of the Program and the hard meal (usually lunch) consists of recommended foods. There is a 12 hour break in food intake between dinner and breakfast which is very important, because during that period actual cleansing takes place. Before starting the Clean Program you need to follow an Elimination Diet when you gradually switch to healthy foods. Depending on your eating habits before starting the Program, the Elimination Diet may last from three to four days up to two weeks.
As any detoxifying program, the Clean Program has some side effects. The majority of them happen at the beginning and gradually disappear.
With such a drastic change in diet and the introduction of so many supplements it’s common to get constipated. According to Dr. Junger, it is extremely important to have regular bowel movements. However, you need to use only natural laxatives such as herbals and/or castor oil.
2. Bloating and Abdominal Discomfort
This is the most common side effect you may encounter while on the Clean Program. It can be caused by:
- Fast elimination of bad bacteria and yeast in your body, which in turn causes elimination of toxic waste in large amounts
- Intolerance to some of the ingredients in the Program, especially oregano oil
- Not enough hydrochloric acid in your stomach
All those symptoms usually disappear in a few days, but sometimes you need to adjust ingredients accordingly.
Headaches are common at the beginning of the Clean Program. They are caused either by rapid increase of toxic waste or, in case if you were a coffee, tea or soft drink addict, may be the result of withdrawal. The important thing is not to take any medications for headache. Dr. Junger recommends dealing with them in natural ways – massage, acupuncture, walking or taking valerian root.
4. Feeling Generally “Sick”
With cleansing, your body becomes more alert and starts to fight conditions which it could not fight before, for example, intestinal parasites. Since they don’t want to be eliminated. that fight can make you feel sick. As a matter of fact, the opposite is correct – your immune system begins healing your body, as it should.
At the beginning of the Clean Program you can feel as if you are hungry. The main words here are “as if.” A lot of people forget what real hunger means. If you feel hunger while on the Program, try to wait. In most cases hunger will go away because it is an emotional hunger caused by boredom, fear or anxiety.
As with any detoxification, you need to consult your doctor before starting the Clean Program. There are some contraindications to using the program. These include being on certain prescription medications, pregnant or nursing, younger than 18, having active cancer or liver disease, or having an allergy to the ingredients used in the Clean Program.
