Although you can’t always control the things that might put you in a bad mood, there are ways you can help control your frame of mind without a lot of extra effort, such as making sure you eat the right foods. Consider implementing the following foods into your diet in order to promote a positive thought process throughout the day.
1. Oatmeal or Pasta
The complex carbohydrates that are found in foods like oatmeal, whole wheat pasta and brown rice provide a couple of different benefits. The carbs work to keep you feeling full, which in turns helps you to manage your mood better. They also help to create a chemical called serotonin which signals your brain to feel calm and relaxed. Make sure you avoid simple carbohydrates like white rice and sugars, because they tend to offer an opposite effect when consumed.

Peanuts, almonds, sunflower and pumpkin seeds are all examples of food that will help you feel satisfied and better able to handle the stresses that arise throughout the day. The healthy fats found in foods such as avocados and coconuts, in addition to nuts and seeds, will keep you from feeling hungry between meals. This gives you an opportunity to focus on your tasks at hand which in turn helps to keep you relaxed.
This tangy fruit isn’t only fun and delicious to eat, but it offers mood enhancing benefits, too. Pineapple provides a quick energy boost soon after it’s eaten, which is often all it takes to elevate your mood. Pineapple packs a big boost of fiber, which helps to slow down the digestion process, leaving you happier and fuller for a longer period of time.
Because chocolate has a small amount of caffeine in it, it acts as a stimulant which results in lifted spirits. A good amount of sugars and chemicals that release endorphins are also found in chocolate, making it a triple threat to bad moods. Consuming a small amount of chocolate can put you in a better mood for hours after it’s gone.
5. Green Vegetables
Vegetables such as spinach, bok choy and chard are high in folate, which is a B vitamin and is known to keep the level of serotonin in your body steady. Serotonin keeps the mood elevated, so making sure you aren’t short of it can easily be accomplished by incorporating more leafy greens into your daily diet. These foods aren’t necessarily something you might think about a lot, but getting enough greens isn’t hard. Consider creating smoothies in the morning mixed with lots of fruit or adding spinach to your salad at lunch.
