4 Foods to Avoid on the High Protein Diet

As the name suggests, the High Protein Diet is an eating plan that encourages a high consumption of protein. The premise behind this diet is that if you consume protein rich foods, your body will develop more muscle and burn more fat. Proteins are the building blocks of muscles, and muscles have the power to burn fat. Therefore, if your physique contains a massive amount of muscle, it will burn calories and fat more efficiently (even at rest). In order to facilitate your body’s muscle building ability, you should perform regular strength training exercises while on the High Protein Diet.

You have to exercise caution while on this diet. If you don’t choose sources of protein that are lean, your weight loss goals could end up backfiring. Also, there are certain foods that should be avoided while on the High Protein Diet:

1. Refined Carbohydrates

Refined carbohydrates can lead to weight gain and interfere with your body’s ability to burn fat and build muscle. The protein you consume on this diet should adequately fuel your appetite, and therefore you won’t need (and shouldn’t crave) excessive amounts of carbs. 2. Alcohol

Your metabolism does not like alcohol, and it interferes with your body’s protein synthesis. This is the process by which your body continuously repairs and maintains each muscle group. Alcohol interferes with this muscle construction, and blocks nutrients like iron, potassium and magnesium—all of which are crucial to muscle growth. Therefore, alcohol should either be completely eliminated or severely restricted while on the High Protein Diet.

3. Fatty Meats

Yes, meat is a protein, and protein is the main focus of this diet. However, if the meat sources you choose are laden with saturated fat, you will not only be putting your health at risk, but you’ll be damaging your fitness and weight loss goals. Be sure the meat you eat is lean if you opt for red meat. Otherwise, lean poultry and fish are always smart choices, as are egg whites and legumes.

4. Sugar

Be aware of hidden sugars, as sugar will turn to fat. Sugar is also bad for your metabolism, as it offers short bursts of energy only to be followed by sudden fatigue. While on the High Protein Diet, steer clear of candy, fruit juices and any baked goods. Remember that fruits also contain sugar, so view them as a treat and consume them in moderation. Also, just because a product says it’s fat free does not mean that it’s sugar free. That fat-free frozen yogurt is probably not a good dessert pick.
