3 Foods that Improve Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety Disorders are a troubling condition that affects thousands each year. It can affect anyone, both children and adults, at any point in your life. A common aliment known popularly as Generalized Anxiety Disorder, symptoms can include excessive worrying, sweating, palpitations, tiredness, insomnia and difficulty with concentration.

Many times anxiety disorders are brought on due to a serious even or series of events that leave you stressed and nervous. These can include abuse, financial concerns, educational and work stress, relationship worries just to name a few. However, there are times when your diet will affect your mental health.

Treating anxiety disorders generally involve with being diagnosed first by your GP who may recommend counseling sessions or cognitive behavioral therapy. Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are a popular medication since they work to increase the serotonin levels in the brain and make you feel better and less anxious.

This may be because your body lacks certain nutrients and minerals in your present diet, resulting in an off-balanced level of serotonin within your brain.

Research has shown that folic acid is essential to allow the brain to function properly and this is why it is sometimes called ‘brain food’. If you do not consume enough folic acid in your diet then you are likely to feel depressed, anxious and lethargic.

2. Bananas

Bananas are one of the most popular fruits on the planet. This wonderful yellow fruit is not only delicious, but it also is great for both the mind and the body. Bananas are a good source of magnesium, a nutrient that is beneficial in helping fight the battle against anxiety disorders. Research has shown that you may suffer from anxiety, agitation, behavioral disturbances, depression, insomnia and restlessness if your body has a lack of magnesium. Magnesium is good for you if you suffer from anxiety because it helps in relaxing the muscles, including the ones around the heart, as well as widening the blood vessels and improving neuromuscular transmission.

3. Fish

Fish, especially oily fish, is a food that you definitely want on your shopping list if you suffer from an anxiety disorder because it is rich in complex Vitamin B. Vitamin B is essential for our bodies as they work as the ‘spark plugs’ within your system, enabling it to function properly. Vitamin B basically converts nutrients like carbohydrates into an energy source. A lack of vitamin B can leave you with several symptoms including nervousness, tiredness, loss of appetite, anxiety, depression and irritability.
