Soy protein is an ingredient that is commonly used in dishes such as soups, salad dressing, vegetarian dishes and meat substitutes. Soy protein is currently gaining popularity because of its many health benefits. For instance, soy protein is effective in promoting heart health. Because of its low fat content, this ingredient is also ideal for weight loss. Here are some snack ideas that you can enjoy if you are currently on a diet.
1. Yeast Bread
If you are used to consuming white bread for snacks, why not make a healthier and low-fat bread by making yeast bread out of soy protein. For this recipe, you will need isolated soy protein. You can choose either vanilla or plain flavor. Begin by mixing together some salt, sugar, oil and water in a pan. Heat up the mixture until the sugar granules are dissolved. Once the mixture is warm, place it a large bowl. Add some active dry yeast to the mixture and stir thoroughly until there are no yeast clumps left. In a separate smaller bowl, combine the isolated soy protein with some flour. Add this combination to your yeast mixture. Use an electric mixer to stir the mixture until it becomes a nice smooth dough. On a board sprinkled with some flour, lay out the dough and begin to knead it. Divide the dough into several sections and shape each section into a roll. Preheat your oven to about 375 degrees F and bake the bread rolls for about 20 to 30 minutes.
2. Michigan Fruit Crisp
The Michigan fruit crisp is prepared in two parts: the filling and the topping. To create the filling, place blueberries and cherries in a mixing bowl. Toss the fruits. In a separate smaller bowl, combine cinnamon, flour and sugar. Pour this mixture over the fruit and stir well before placing it in a baking dish. To make the topping, mix together some dry textured soy protein, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon and flour. Add some melted margarine and stir the ingredients well. Sprinkle the topping over the fruit using your fingers. Bake for about 45 minutes.
3. Soy Protein Bar
A soy protein bar is an ideal low-fat snack and also a good breakfast item for those mornings when you’re in a rush. Another good thing about this protein bar recipe is that it won’t require any baking. Start by spraying a cake pan with some vegetable oil spray to prevent sticking. For this recipe, you can choose plain, chocolate or vanilla-flavored soy protein powder. In a mixing bowl, combine the soy protein powder, textured soy protein and oats. Set aside. In a saucepan, mix together cocoa, sugar and soymilk. Let the mixture boil for a minute. Make sure that you stir it regularly to prevent sticking. Turn the heat down after a minute and add some vanilla, soynut butter and margarine to the cocoa mixture. Turn off the heat and pour the cocoa mixture over the dry ingredients in your mixing bowl. Stir well and spread the mixture evenly on your cake pan. After about half an hour, the mixture will harden as it cools. You can then easily use a knife to cut out portions to make protein bars.
