Iodine is a trace mineral found in the human body and is beneficial in keeping the body active and healthy. Around 80% of the body's iodine is found in the thyroid which helps to regulate growth and development. Many thyroid problems are caused by a lack of iodine in the thyroid.
There are many health benefits to iodine – including increased fertility, weight loss, mood enhancement and concentration – but there are also many positive beauty benefits. Since iodine is found in many different natural ingredients, you get the benefits straight away and enjoy the sensation of a new beauty treatment.
1. Kelp or Seawater
Kelp or seaweed is naturally high in iodine, and because of this it is full of natural antioxidants and antibacterial properties, making it a great ingredient in beauty products. It can be used in a number of different ways, from a moisturizer to an exfoliant.
You can make a quick and easy kelp bath to get the beauty benefits of iodine. Simply add three tablespoons of dried kelp into the foot section of a stocking or pantyhose and tie it closed. Then, as you are bathing, simply rub it gently over your face and skin. The results are that your skin will feel refreshed and absorbs the iodine naturally found in the kelp.
Not only are strawberries yummy to eat (and to smell), but they too are rich in natural iodine. Strawberries have been used in beauty products for thousands of years, so why bother heading to the beauty store to grab a strawberry-smelling product when you can simply head to your kitchen to get that natural iodine?
Grab a bowl of strawberries and crush them until they resemble a smoothie. You can add in a little milk and honey if you like (but remember to resist the temptation to eat it!) and stir until the mixture is as smooth as you can get it. With your fingers, simply smear the strawberry mixture onto your face and skin and relax for 20 minutes. The iodine within the strawberries will be absorbed, leaving your skin feeling smoother and smelling great.
What is better than the smell of strawberries? Bananas! That lovely smelling yellow fruit has also been around in beauty products for thousands of years and you too can reap the beauty benefits. Iodine is found naturally in bananas, which is great news for your nose as well as your body.
Bananas have been used in a number of different ways and the results are all the same – you get great looking skin, your body is nourished and you smell fantastic. Grab a banana and mash it into a paste. Add in a little bit of milk, honey and some natural oatmeal. Stir for five minutes and then smear onto your face and the rest of the body. Gently wash off after 20 minutes. This mixture works great as an exfoliator and your skin will naturally absorb the iodine.
